Physical Training Department

​​​​​​​​The aim of the Physical Training Department of the Army Education and Training Command and School of Applied Military Studies is to enable each officer attending the course to:
  • fully develop their psychological and physical potential to the best of their ability in order to get high scores when being tested;
  • consolidate their knowledge of motor and food education;
  • maintain physical fitness over the years to avoid physical wear and tear.
REGULAR ENTRY OFFICERS
The syllabus is developed through theory classes and practical training activities.
Theory classes foresee teaching and consolidating:
  • principles of motor education through subjects such as anatomy and applied physiology, traumatology, training theory and training methodology;
  • principles of nutrition through basic notions of healthy eating and correct nutrition during physical activity as well as nutrition under special climatic situations.
Practical training activities set the preconditions for:
  • General Training, i.e., athletics, boxing, swimming, muscle strengthening;
  • Operational Training, i.e., obstacle training course, weighted marching, tactical swimming, military combat method (i.e., mixed martial arts).
A series of pre-established assessment tests for both theory classes and training activities verifies the achievement of the objectives set for physical training. Regular Entry Officers can also take up optional activities such as athletics, swimming, water polo, riding, fencing, volleyball, boxing, etc.

ADDITIONAL COURSES
As for the other courses held at the Education and Training Command, the learning path of officers focuses on practical activities and provides general training with and without a final test.

DEPARTMENT ORGANISATION
The Physical Training Department is organised to ensure that competent instructors are well acquainted with the syllabi and the specific objectives set for the course(s) they teach. To this end, the Physical Training Department appoints an instructor and an assistant instructor for both physical training and all related assessments throughout each course.
In addition, an R&D Unit specially set up within the Department constantly updates the syllabi to tailor education and training to the possible future assignments of the attending officers.

AVAILABLE FACILITIES
The attending officers and the staff of the Education and Training Command have access to a muscle-training gym equipped with state-of-the-art machinery to train and maintain their fitness levels. Attendees can work out on the athletics track, rugby field and military obstacles course of the “Porcelli” Military Sports Complex located in the Piazza d’Armi area.

​​​The same area also houses the Military Equestrian Centre where military personnel with or without Italian Equestrian Sports Federation Qualifications to practice horse riding. A number of five-a-side football and tennis courts are available as well. Additionally, the ‘Città di Torino’ complex hosts a multi-discipline sport area for indoor basketball, volleyball and tennis practice located inside an air dome.​​​​
