Military Education and Training

Basic Military Education

The Army Education and Training Command and School of Applied Military Studies is the sole military institute of high military studies in the Army and is in charge of both Basic and Advanced Military Education for all officers. The Military Academy in Modena is responsible to teach military education and training for the first three years to regular entry officers, who follow a graduate curriculum. After that, they follow a two-year post-graduate curriculum at the Army School of Applied Military Studies, which is responsible for:
Basic military education as foreseen for Junior Regular Entry Officers, i.e. Second Lieutenants and Lieutenants. More specifically, basic military education aims at:
  • providing sound general knowledge alongside education to obtain the Master’s Degree in Strategic Sciences to both combat arms and Quartermasters Corps on completion of the curriculum. The officers of the Army Corps of Technical Engineers complete the Master’s Degree in Engineering curriculum.
  • military professional skills as Platoon Leaders and Deputy Company Commanders.
The Institute also teaches Basic Military Education within the Course of Applied Military Sciences for Professionally Qualified Officers of the Corps of Technical Engineers and of the Medical Corps. The Course is attended by holders of a scientific degree who have passed a public selection held by the Italian Ministry of Defence. It covers basic military education and specific military techniques and procedures, also in English. The attendees acquire specific operational and training tools of their Branch/Specialty of service and focus on subjects related to their specialisation. Additionally, they develop technical skills and carry out trialling activities.

  • Course of Applied Military Studies and Techniques for Special Entry Combat Arms and Logistic Corps Officers.
The course is attended by Special Entry officers taken from the Augmentation Reserve and from the ranks of non-commissioned officers who have passed a dedicated public selection to become officers, the course focuses on making the attendees aware of the responsibilities and duties related to their “status” of career officers. Furthermore, the course teaches how to operate during deployments and manage logistical and administrative issues correctly in units.
  • Courses for Officers of the Selected Force.
The Selected Force is a pool of professionals with professional skills the Italian Army has a specific interest in. It is an actual “power multiplier” for the Army: skilled professionals taken from civil life can overcome the shortage of skills that are unavailable in the ranks of the Regular, Special Entry or Professionally Qualified Officers. The Course prepares the attendees to serve as officers in the Italian Army, in light of possible future assignments in Italy or abroad and focuses on teaching them how to live, move and operate in a training mission-oriented scenario.
  • Courses for On Term Officer Cadets.
At the end of the course, the attendees receive their commission as On Term Lieutenants, an auxiliary status to supplement Regular Entry Officers of the Corps of Technical Engineers, Quartermasters Corps, Medical Corps, and Veterinary Corps. The attendees receive technical guidance and develop skills to execute, professionally and autonomously, planning, analysis, research and procurement-related activities as well as to provide consultancy in different contexts and operational scenarios.
