The Units of the Army Aviation are gathered from the "squadrons group" to the Army Aviation Command that is an intermediate Command directly dependent on the Operational Land Forces Command and Army Operational Centre.
Various groups form the regiments that were called "groupings" in the past.
Most of the units have got aircrafts with rotating wing; the units located in Viterbo and the military airport of Ciampino have got aircrafts with fixed wing, represented by Dornier Do-228 and by Piaggio P-180.
Since 1979 the Army Aviation has been providing an helicopters squadron redeployed in Naqura, Lebanon, for the United Nations.
In all overseas missions, personnel and means of the Army Aviation constitute the air units for our contingents.
At present there are 9 regiments and 4 of them are logistic support regiments; their Standard are awarded with 1 Knight Cross of the Military Order of Italy, 1 Bronze Medal to the Military Valour, 4 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal to the Army Valour, 6 Silver Medals to the Civil Valour and 2 Silver Crosses to the Army Merit.
