The Engineer has got a decoration composed by two criss-crossed hatchets and a flaming bomb over them. It is worn by the "outside corps" personnel and the Pioneers. According to the specialization there are also the Pontoons, the Railwaymen and the Sappers.
Since the eighteenth century the Pontoons have existed as Artillery Specialty but in 1873 they became an Engineer Specialty. Their insignia has got a flaming bomb and two criss-crossed anchors. Today there is only the 2nd Pontoons Engineer Regiment among the components of the Army and it is located in Piacenza.
The Railwaymen Engineer Regiment has shown its operational capabilities in solving problems related to the rail practicability in ex-Yugoslavia. The decoration of this unit fuses together the symbols of the Army and the Pontoons adding the classical wings and a train wheel.
The Sappers is the most recent specialty of the Engineer Army, appeared in the Second World War and become famous thanks to the 31st Battalion of Major Paolo Caccia Dominioni in Northern Africa. The Sappers wear the basic decoration but with a sword under the bomb and on the flame. Under the blade of the sword there is a red flame. The last decoration to the right is the version for the Alpine troops in which the flame is substituted by the eagle and the horn.
The Paratroopers Sappers have got the decoration constituted by parachute, sword and spread wings.
The insignias, realized in matt silver metal and lied on a shiny metal circle, are fixed on the beret and the rigid cap.
