
"Impetu hostem perterreo"
The "Cavalleggeri di Montebello" Regiment was constituted on 16th September 1859 in Voghera, with three squadrons provided by the "Novara", "Aosta" and "Monferrato" Regiments. Moved to the "Lancieri" specialty in 1860, the Regiment was employed for the repression of the brigandage and in 1866 in the Third War of Independence. It also participated in the campaigns of Eritrea (1887 and 1895) and Libya (1911). During the Great War it fought in Peteano in 1916, in Visnadello in 1917, in Vittorio Veneto in 1918 and in the freed Udine where it was one of the first to enter.
After having absorbed the "Cavalleggeri di Catania" Regiment in 1919, it was dissolved on 20th May 1920, ceding some squadrons to the "Nizza" and "Vittorio Emanuele II" Regiments.
It was reconstituted on 15th July 1942 as 8th "Lancieri di Montebello" Armoured Explorer Group and since 1st April it was included in the "Ariete" Armoured Cavalry Division. Protagonist in the struggles to defend Rome from 8th to 15th September 1943, it was dissolved on 16th September.
Reconstituted on 1st January 1950 in Rome as "Lancieri di Montebello" Squadrons Group, it became 8th "Lancieri di Montebello" Armoured Cavalry Regiment on 1st May 1951; since 4th November 1958 it was renamed as 8th "Lancieri di Montebello" Regiment.
With the reorganization of the Army in 1975, on 30th September it was reorganized as 8th "Lancieri di Montebello" Armoured Squadrons Group and since 1st July 1979 in became a mechanized squadrons group.
On the framework of the reorganization of the Army, on 23rd September 1992 the Regiment was reconstituted to be employed with its new "Centauro" armoured vehicles for the "Ibis" mission in Somalia where, during the battles on 2nd July 1993, the Regiment lost its Second Lieutenant Andrea Millevoi awarded with the Golden Medal to the Military Valour. Later the Regiment participated in the operations of public order in Homeland.
Since March 2004 it constitutes the horseback squadrons group that flanks the armoured squadrons group in situations of representation.
