As detachment of the Royal Application School of the Cavalry, it was founded on 15th November 1823 in Pinerolo. The Military Hippodrome in Tor di Quinto is the headquarters of the Horse Military Centre of the "Lancieri di Montebello! Regiment, the cavalry unit of the Capital.
On 24th October 1891 the first horse riding course started. Among the first participant Officers there were the First Lieutenant of Roccagiovine, the First Lieutenant Brascorens of Savoiroux, the First Lieutenant Fattori and the Captain Federico Caprilli.
It was the promoter of the new Italian doctrine based on the natural equitation that was made official by a work in 1901 and concretely in 1902 on the occasion of the First Official Horse riding Competition of Turin.
Today at the Horse Military Centre of the "Lancieri di Montebello" Regiment there are about fifty horses for the courses in favour of disabled people, military and civil personnel of the Ministry of Defence. It is 32 hectares wide, situated at the foot of the Fleming hill where it forms a natural uncontaminated area for the horses.
The hippodrome is also open to the members of the different Equestrian Associations for training activities and hurdle jumping with the horses, upon acquisition of a card released by the Direction of the Centre.
There is also an agreement between the Army and the National Cavalry Association for the organization of events/activities in any Military facilities dedicated to the equestrian sector, aiming to reduce the general costs of the facilities.
Every year several events take place in the Centre that are open to the public.
Since 14th May 2005 the Centre is dedicated to Lieutenant General Pietro Giannattasio.
