The 4th Alpines Regiment
The 4th Alpine Regiment was constituted on 1st November 1882 with the "Val Pellice", "Val Chisone" and "Val Brenta" Battalions that were substituted by the "Pinerolo", "Ivrea" and "Aosta" Battalions in 1886; in 1889 the "Susa" Battalion was added. In the First World War it was employed on the Croda Rossa, Isonzo and Monte Mrzli. In 1916 on Adamello, Monte Cima, Monte Zugna, Monte Cauriol, Monte Cardianal, Alpe di Cosmagnon, Dente del Pasubio; in 1917 on Monte Vodice, Vette di Gallio, Monte Fior, Massiccio del Grappa; in 1918 on Monte Solarolo. For the Great War it mobilized the "Monte Levanna", "Monte Cervino", "Monte Rosa", "Val d'Orco", "Val Baltea" and "Val Toce" Battalions. When the war ended, it drew up in lines only the "Ivrea", "Aosta" and "Intra" Battalions.
The Regiment has been reorganized many times, changing its structure and dependency between the two wars, until the outbreak of the Second World War when it became Regiment of the "Taurinense" Division with the "Ivrea", "Aosta" and "Intra" Battalions. Employed on the Western front, in Albania and later in Yugoslavia-Montenegro, it was definitively dissolved in October 1943 in Montenegro. The "Intra" Battalion, led by Captain Piero Zavattaro Ardizzi, participated in the resistance in Serbia-Montenegro and the survivors were included in the "Garibaldi" Italian Partisan Division. Reconstituted on 15th April 1946, it was dissolved on 10th October 1975 when traditions and War Flag passed to the "Aosta" Alpines Battalion of the Alpine Military School of Aosta.
The "Monte Cervino" Alpines Battalion
Included in the 4th Regiment, in winter 1915 the "Monte Cervino" Alpines Battalion was constituted to be later dissolved at the end of the First World. Reconstituted in December 1940 as "Monte Cervino" Skiers Battalion, it was dissolved when the operations on the Greek-Albanian front were concluded; it reappeared in October 1941. It participated in the Russian campaign, deserving the highest recognition to the military valour; it was dissolved again in September 1943.
The platoons of the Alpine Brigades and the Alpine Paratroopers Company
The first platoon of Alpine Paratroopers was constituted on 1st September 1952 at the "Tridentina" Alpine Brigade in Bessanone. Later the "Julia", "Taurinense", "Cadore" and "Orobica" Alpine Brigades were constituted. The first airdrop in mountain was carried out by the Alpine Paratroopers of the platoon of the "Tridentina" on the glacier of Ruitor (Val d'Aosta) 3000 m high. On 1st April 1964 the Alpine Paratroopers Company was formed by personnel of the dissolved Alpine Paratroopers platoons of the five alpine Brigades; since 1st January 1990 it was called "Monte Cervino" Alpine Paratroopers Company. On 14th July 1996 the company was included in the "Monte Cervino" Alpine Paratroopers Battalion that received the War Flag on 28th November 1996.
On 25th September 2004 the Battalion entered the 4th Alpine Paratroopers Regiment.
