
"Vigilantes"
It was constituted on 1st November 1882 with the "Val Pesio", "Col Tenda" and "Val Schio" Battalions that in 1886 changed their names into "Borgo San Dalmazzo", "Vinadio" then "Dronero" and "Dronero" then "Saluzzo".
Between 1911 and 1912 it was employed in Libya and then it participated in the First World War.
In 1921 it was included in the 1st Alpine Division that became Group in 1923 and Alpine Brigade in 1926. In 1935 it formed the "Cuneense" Alpine Division with the 1st Alpine Regiment and the 4th Alpine Artillery Regiment. The "Saluzzo" Battalion participated in the campaign in Eastern Africa.
In 1940 the Regiment participated in the campaign on the western front and in 1940-1941 it was in Albania, on the Greek front and on the Yugoslavian front. In 1942 it was included in the Alpine Army Corps to be sent to Russia where it became a legend. Returned in spring 1943 it was dissolved in Bolzano after the Armistice of 8th September 1943.
It was reconstituted on 1st July 1963 as regiment for the training of the recruits for the alpine brigades, with the "Tridentina", "Orobica", "Cadore" and "Taurinense" Battalions; on 31st October 1974 it was dissolved as a consequence of the reorganization of the Army.
The traditions of the Regiment were taken by the "Saluzzo" Battalion that was reconstituted on 23rd November 1945 for the 4th Regiment. The Battalion was dissolved again between 1964 and 1967. It became independent on 10th October 1975, when the 4th Alpine Regiment was dissolved, and passed to the dependencies of the "Taurinense" Brigade.
On 28th August 1992 the Battalion entered the 2nd Alpine Regiment.
