With a tradition of sense of duty, heroism and sacrifice, it has shared with the fighters good and adverse fortune in the Wars of Independence, in Africa and against Austria-Hungary. During the last conflict, on seven fronts, in the partisan struggle and in the war of Liberation, it has confirmed its military virtues of courage, love for the Country and holocaust, adding among its Heroes, many fallen soldiers that have sacrificed to save their friends and increase the glory of the Homeland (To the Medical Corps. Within the Italian Contingent, part of the Multinational Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon, the field hospital was sent to Beirut in order to provide for assistance and medical care to wounded and ill people, military and civilian people, in its humanitarian activities regardless of political and religious beliefs and race. For its enthusiasm, generosity and humanity, the medical personnel has gained esteem, affection and gratitude not only by the Lebanese population but also by the allied military Contingents and the local civilian authorities. In that way the Medical Corps has reaffirmed its tradition of dedication to duty, discipline and great technical expertise, gaining recognition inside and outside the boundaries of the Homeland. In occasion of the earthquake on 23rd November 1980 that stroke the Regions of Campania and Basilicata, the Military Medical Corps intervened promptly and efficiently on 24th November with a Helicopter-Medical Unit in S. Angelo dei Lombardi, a field hospital in Lioni, a field hospital in Pescopagano and on 25th and 26th with another field hospital in Eboli. Since 30th November, along with more than 300 volunteer nurses of the Italian Red Cross from all Italy, it has organized a network of 313 medical centres in the damaged Municipalities for the medical-surgical assistance and preventive medicine. In the rescue and assistance operations, it has done its best with spirit of self-denial, in prohibitive weather conditions and with the succession of earthquake shocks. It has contributed to save many human lives thanks to 41,000 medical and surgical interventions, 150,000 vaccinations and 3,000 hygienic interventions for the control of the potable water and the land reclamation. Its rapid coordination of the operations, the spirit of sacrifice and the high competence of the Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and soldiers permitted to avoid the risk of disease. It has gained prestige, admiration and unanimous recognition by the local Authorities and the rescued populations for its valour also in rescue operations from the ruins, recovery and hospitalization of injured people. Its veterinary Officers intervened promptly in the area struck by the earthquake of 23rd November 1980 overcoming organizational and environmental difficulties in prohibitive and dangerous weather conditions, with an extraordinary spirit of sacrifice, sense of duty and exceptional self-denial. In dangerous conditions due to destructions, collapses and landslides, it reclaimed the land, inspected foods, recovered animals taking them to shelter centres, supplied the fodders to the isolated farmhouses in Alta Irpinia, Valle del Sele and Basilicata through routes made difficult by geological instability, heavy snowfall and bitter cold. It distinguished in the social and economical reorganization of the disaster areas where, with its high technical expertise and spirit of initiative, it avoided the onset of contagious diseases for men and animals; it also reduced losses of the considerable and valuable livestock heritage. Its unceasing work of rescue created the preconditions for a return to normal life, gaining admiration and gratitude by local populations and contributing to increase the prestige of the Institution. Employed in Albania, Somalia and Mozambique for the Pellicano, Ibis and Albatros operations, the Corps has provided for care and assistance to military and civilian people with expertise and great self-denial, also in case of difficult conditions. For the enthusiasm, availability and generous spirit of participation, it has gained unanimous esteem and gratitude by the allied military Contingents and by all the local population. The Medical Corps of the Army, heir of the glorious tradition of sacrifice and dedication to service, it reaffirmed high efficiency and human solidarity. (To the Medical Corps. In the "Ibis" Operation, the Veterinary Corps has contributed to rescue Somali people intervening with Officers in favour of the local livestock heritage. In that circumstance the personnel of the Corps has contributed to the best performance of the mission, operating with high professionalism, sense of duty and marked initiative. The technical activities of the veterinary Officers, carried out in dangerous situations, have saved the livestock that was the only source of livelihood for indigenous populations. Thanks to its dedication, the Contingent was able to maintain excellent relations with local populations, contributing to increase the prestige of the Armed Force in Homeland and internationally. The Military Veterinary Service has constantly offered to the Health Bodies the work of illustrious clinicians, bacteriologists, virologists and researchers with high organizational capabilities as well as collective and individual interventions. The contribution of the Veterinary Officers was also noteworthy as pioneers, to the diagnostics, prophylaxis and treatment of tetanus and of diseases transmissible from animals to humans. The really appreciated serums, vaccines and allergic substances produced by the Service Establishments are still today used for civilian use. In periods of war and in peacetimes the Veterinary Officers has contributed to maintain the public health ensuring "substitutive services", especially for the food hygiene of populations. Initiatives and interventions, organized by the Military Veterinary Service along with the Civilian Health Authorities, have been precious to solve problems related to calamities and floods in Tuscany or elsewhere. The Health School is guarding provisionally the Silver Cross to the Merit of the Army, granted by the Minister Secretary of State for the Defence Affairs to the Military Hospital of Udine with the following motivation: after the earthquake in Friuli on 6th May 1976 it intervened promptly to assisted the populations in the earthquake areas. It operated with hard work and spirit of self-denial contributing to the admission to hospital, care and assistance of the injured. For those activities it gained the unanimous recognition by the populations of Friuli. (6th May 1976 – 30th April 1977).
