On 11th June 1775 a Royal Corps of Engineers was instituted to serve the Savoy Army that, after the French occupation, was dissolved by the King of Sardinia on 9th December 1798.
With the Restoration, in May 1814 the reconstitution started to be completed in May 1816 with the formation of the Military and Civil Engineer Royal Corps; the name was changed in 1823 into Engineer Royal Corps. On 24th January 1861 the Engineer Army was created, including the existent regiments.
Later the regiments increased in number, with different specialties such as sappers, railway pioneers, telegraphists and mine specialists. By Royal Decree of 23rd December 1900 the Flag was granted to the Engineer, entrusting it to the Engineer Inspectorate and since 1903 to the oldest Brigade in the Capital.
With the implementation of the order 1910, the Engineer could have six regiments, among which there were sappers, telegraphists, mine specialists, railway pioneers and a specialists battalion.
During the First World War, the Engineer mobilized a great number of units of different Specialties: sappers, mine specialists telegraphists, lagooners, railway pioneers, photoelectricians, radiotelegraphists, flame throwers, motorists, gas throwers, electricians, plumbings, firemen, motormen).
With the order of 1923 there were 10 Armed Corps Groups, transformed into Engineer regiments in 1926, and the regiments of telegraphists, sappers, lagooners and railway pioneers. In May 1940 the Engineer entered to war with 18 Engineer regiments, 2 mine specialists regiments, 2 sappers regiments and a railway pioneers regiment.
During the Second World War several groups, a regiment for Ethiopia, battalions of the different Specialties, divisional battalions and smaller units were mobilized.
During the War of Liberation there were the 1st Engineer mixed battalion with the 1st Motorized Group, mixed battalions, Combat Groups and railway pioneers battalions gathered into a group.
In the post-war pioneers companies and battalions were formed as well as signals companies and battalions assigned to the big units.
Moreover 6 regiments were reconstituted (3 pioneers regiments, 2 sappers regiments and 1 railway sappers regiment) flanking the Army Corps battalions and Brigade Companies. At present the Engineer includes nine sappers regiments, among which one paratroopers sappers regiment and two alpines sappers regiments, and a railway sappers regiment.
