In 1964 the Chief of General Staff of the Army gave the name of "Serenissima" Lagunari Regiment to the specialty in order to preserve the traditions of the "Serenissima Republic of Venice" marine infantry, constituted by the doge Enrico Dandolo in 1202 and changed into "Fanti da Mar" in the 16th century.
The recognition of the specialty was on 25th June 1984 by Decree of the Minister of Defence, concluding a path started in 1951 with the constitution of the "lagunari forces sector" that had to defend the lagoon area in Veneto.
Their bridings have got the shape of the marine infantry insignias that maintained the pentagon shape of the patches used by the Army until the 20s. This patch has got a scarlet background with the winged lion of San Marco gripping a sword in its right paw and a closed Gospel in the left one; the whole is overlapped by two criss-crossed rifles lied on an anchor. On the lower part there is the star. This patch is fixed on the regular winter uniform of the Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers with the rank of Marshals and Sergeants, and Soldiers.
The troop wears only the stars on the collar of the regular winter uniform and the badge stitched on the sleeves.
For the regular summer uniform, all the personnel wears the stars on the collars and the metallic badge representing the Lion of San Marco in the centre of the left small pocket.
