The Army Special Forces Command was instituted in September 2013 in Pisa, after the great military Reform of 2012 by the Minister of Defence Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola.
Before the constitution of this new command, the Italian Army had not a command for the training of the Special Forces and the Forces for Special Operations. Over time they have been at the dependencies of different commands and big units such as the "Folgore" Paratroopers Brigade, the Alpine Troops Command and the Artillery Command.
The Command became operative in February 2014, even if the transition of the units was completed before the end of that year.
