The 3rd "Aldebaran" Regiment – Helicopters for Special Operations was instituted on 10th November 2014 at the "T.Fabbri" airport in Viterbo, transforming the existent 26th "Jupiter" Squadrons Group and inheriting the name and the war flag by the 3rd "Aldebaran" Regiment of Bresso (MI) that was dissolved on 1st September 1998.
On 19th November 2014 the war flag of the dissolved 3rd "Aldebaran" Regiment, stored at the Shrine of the Flags in the Vittoriano Museum (Rome), was given to the 3rd Regiment – Helicopters for Special Operations.
The Regiment was formed after a specific project by the General Staff of the Army within the reorganization of the Italian Army Special Forces. Colonel Andrea DI STASIO, who was already the Chief of the Working Group of the General Staff of the Army for the Unification, has been the first Commander of the Regiment.
Nowadays the 3rd Regiment – Helicopters for Special Operations corresponds corresponds to the NATO Special Operations Air Task Group (SOATG) and it has got three flight lines on CH-47C , AB-412 and NH-90 to carry out the operations in the Full Spectrum of the specific missions of the Special Forces, on the national territory but also abroad.
