"AD ARDUA SUPER ALPES PATRIA VOCAT"
The 9th Alpine Regiment was constituted on 1st July 1921 with the "Vicenza", "Bassano", "Feltre" and "Cividale" Battalions and it entered the 3rd Alpine Division.
Since 1935 it was included in the "Julia" Division and on 13th April it constituted the "L'Aquila" Alpine Battalion in Gorizia. Its motto, by an idea of the Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio (D'Aquila Penne, ugne di Leonessa) contains the name of three cities of Abruzzo that were the recruitment basin of the Battalion. The Battalion participated with the regiment in the campaigns of Greece and Russia where it distinguished during the violent conflicts.
Come back to Italy, it was dissolved in September 1943 in Udine. After the reorganization of the Army in 1975, the "Vicenza" Alpine Battalion received the War Flag and the traditions of the 9th Regiment that was reconstituted on 26th August 1996 in L'Aquila, based on the preexistent "L'Aquila" Alpine Battalion. That Unit, reformed in September 1944 as "Abruzzi" Alpine Battalion (renamed later as "L'Aquila"), fought in Italy with the special Infantry Regiment of the "Legnano" Combat Group; at the end of the war it was included in the 8th Alpine Regiment of the "Julia" Brigade. Moved from Tarvisio (UD) to L'Aquila in 1975, on 4th September 1991 it constituted one of the "leader" regiment.
Today the 9th Alpine Regiment is included in the "Taurinense" Alpine Brigade and it depends on the Alpine Troops Command. It has also participated in the most recent operations abroad of the Italian Army. It has been very important its participation in the "Enduring Freedom" Operation known as "Nibbio Contingent", for which it has been awarded with the Knight Cross of the Military Order of Italy.
