On 1st June 2004 the pre-existent RISTA-IEW Grouping, constituted in 2001, changed its name into RISTA-IEW Brigade.
It has originated from the Electronic Defence Centre (CDE) constituted in 1963 with the acquisition of the 9th Signals Battalion, that was formed on 1st April 1959 in Rome as a result of the transformation of the I-RG Signals Special Company, and the personnel of the 11th Signals Battalion.
Composed by personnel belonging to the artillery and signals Corps, the Centre has increased its competences constituting a "Signal Intelligence Nucleus" that has given rise to the 8th "Tonale" Signals and Electronic Research Battalion.
After having changed its name into Information and Electronic Defence Centre (CIDE) in 1980, it included the 8th "Tonale" Battalion and the 9th "Rombo" Battalion. In that organization, it has got at its dependencies the 33rd "Falzarego" Electronic War Battalions and the 41st "Cordenons" Specialists Artillery Group.
It was suppressed on 31st December 1997 and it was substituted by the Information and Electronic War Department that included the IEW Centre. On 19th May 1998 the Department was reorganized into RISTA-EIW Grouping, included in the new C4 IEW Command, at the dependencies of the Operational Land Forces Command; on 1st June 2004 it assumed the current name.
