As in case of metallic conductors, the optical fibers have got dissipation phenomena because part of the energy in transit is absorbed by the fiber itself and transformed in heat. The absorption of the fibers, linked to the presence of chemical impurities, reduces the efficiency of the transmission means. For this reason the measure of the mileage attenuation is important in realizing a backbone with bit rate.
The tools supplied permit to perform attenuation measures of an optical sign in correspondence with transmission windows used to implement f.o. networks.
