The history of the 5^th "Rigel" Army Aviation Regiment has developed from that one of 5^th Light Aviation Unit and the 5^th Helicopters Unit that have been originated from the Helicopters Experimental Unit and the Light Aircrafts Unit of the 5^th Army Corps.

On 1^st January 1976 the 5^th "Rigel" Light Aviation Group of the Army was constituted including the aerial units of the 5^th Army Corps. After having received the War Flag by Decree of 14^th March 1977, on 5^th October it became a Regiment.

Since 12^th June 1993 it has assumed the current name of 5^th "Rigel" Army Aviation Regiment but it was changed into 5^th Air Cavalry Regiment on 1^st January 2000 before taking again the name of Army Aviation. It now includes the support squadrons group, the 27^th "Mercurio" squadrons group and the 49^th "Capricorno" squadrons group.
