"Ab origine fama"
The Regiment was constituted on 1st October 1850 taking the traditions of the Piedmont Artillery. It participated in the expedition to Crimea and in the Second War of Independence. Renamed 1st Regiment on 7th October 1859, after the new organization established by decree of 17th June 1860, it assumed the name of 5th Artillery Regiment – campaign regiment and it moved to the occupation of Central-Southern Italy with the new-formed Italian Army. After the Third War of Independence, it changed its name again into 5th Artillery Regiment to which it added the expression "campaign" on 29th June 1882. In 1895 the Regiment, composed of a General Staff, seven field batteries and a deposit, contributed to the form the units that fought in Eritrea. After the campaign in Libya in 1911-1912, the Regiment participated in the Great War, particularly in the main battles ended with the "battle of Solstizio" that open the way to the victory. In 1934 it was renamed 5th Artillery Regiment of infantry Division and one year later it sent personnel to Eastern Africa.
Included in the 1st "Superga" Division with the 91st and 92nd Infantry Regiments, it went to the western alpine front in 1940 and from 1942 to 1943, reorganized as a motorized artillery regiment, it participated in the operations of the Division in Tunisia where it was dissolved after the adverse events of the campaign in 1943. The 4th Group of the Regiment, remained in Italy, fought in Stagno near Livorno on 9th September 1943. The Commander, Major Gian Paolo Gamerra, was awarded with a Golden Medal to the Military Valour for the Memory.
On 1st January 1947 the 5th Artillery Regiment was reconstituted in Albenga by two groups of the 155th "Mantova" Artillery. In May 1947 the Regiment was moved to Palmanova and formed the 3rd Group. In January 1954 the Regiment was moved to Udine at the "A. Cavarzerani" Barracks and in December 1954 it was named Artillery Regiment of the "Mantova" Division, including the Command and Command Unit, three groups of 105/22, a group of 155/23, a light aircraft unit and a specialists battery. Since 1st October 1965 it included: a Command and a Command Unit, three groups of 105/22, a group of 155/23 and a specialists battery.
On 1st January 1976 the 5th "Mantova" campaign artillery Regiment was dissolved originating the Artillery Command of the Mantova Mechanized Division, the 28th "Livorno" campaign artillery Group for the "Isonzo" Brigade, the 155th "Emilia" self-propelled field heavy artillery Group, the "Mantova" specialists Group and the 5th "Superga" self-propelled field heavy artillery Group that inherited the Flag and the traditions of the Regiment. After the "Mantova" Division was dissolved, the Group passed at the direct dependencies of the Artillery Command of the 5th Army Corps.
Included in the 5th Field Heavy Artillery Regiment from 1st December 1991 to 11th September 1992, it reconstituted the 5th "Superga" Field Heavy Artillery Regiment.
Dissolved on 30th November 2001 in Udine, it was reconstituted in Portogruaro (VE) by transformation of the preexistent 3rd "Volturno" Regiment.
