The rigid cap in the three versions (winter, summer and black for the Ceremonial Uniforms) is garnished with the decoration of the Army, Corps or Specialty as well as the insignias of rank. They are represented by changing the chinstrap of the cap into a silver twist for Generals, a golden twist for Senior Officers, a golden lozenge for Lower Officers and a gold and black lozenge for Marshals and Sergeants.
It is black for Volunteers in Permanent Service. The bars represent the stars or the other insignias of the Marshals and Sergeants located on the sides of the chinstrap, near the buttons that fix it to the cap.
For the Alpine Hat the ranks are represented by several details. The Hat of the Troop in fixed conscription is different from that of the personnel in permanent service. The Troop and the Non-Commissioned Officers up to the rank of Sergeant have got a woollen tassel while for Marshals the tassel is in golden metal and for Generals is in silver metal. The decoration is black for the Troop, up to the rank of Corporal, and golden starting from the rank of Corporal. The Generals have got silver and golden insignias (Lieutenant General).
On the chepì of the Historical Uniforms and those of the Horse Artillery the ranks of the Officers are located on the upper part of the headgear in a series of stripes or lozenges that represent stars, towered crown, bars of the Marshal and horizontal lines for Sergeants, Non-Commissioned Officers and Troop.
