"Ardente la fiamma, intrepido il cuore"
It was constituted on 1st November 1888 with batteries that participated in the three War of Independence , in the War of Crimea and the conquest of Rome. It provided with men and vehicles for the campaign in Eritrea and Libya.
In 1912 it contributed to form the 28th Campaign Artillery Regiment. It participated in the Great War in line up to Piave and until the final victory. After several reorganization, in 1936, as motorized artillery regiment it was armed with 75/27 and 100/17 cannons.
Assigned to the 101st "Trieste" Division, in 1940 it fought on the alpine front and in Albania that it left in 1941 for the northern Africa. It arrived there with the Division that fought epic battles for more than twenty months. On 12th May 1943 the Regiment was dissolved in Tunisia after the battle of Enfidaville. For its heroic conduct, the unit deserved the maximum recognition to the Military Valour.
Reconstituted on 1st October 1950 in Bologna and reassigned to the "Trieste" Division, it received the English 88/27 cannons and it drew up in lines six groups, two of which were self-propelled. Employed in 1954 in the operation for giving Trieste back to Italy, it ceded a part of the dependent groups to regiments deployed in Friuli, until it remained with only two groups. When the "Trieste" Division was reduced to a Brigade, the Regiment was dissolved and its Flag was layed down to "Vittoriano" on 20th October 1960.
The "Trieste" Campaign Artillery Group, heir of the Regiment, was rearmed with 105/14, 105/22 mod. 14/61 cannons called "the monsters". After the reorganization in 1975, the Group was named 21st "Romagna" Campaign Artillery Group on 18th September, armed with 155/23 cannons on mechanized towing.
After having got back the War Flag of the Regiment in November 1976, in 1991 it took the M109G self-propelled vehicles and, when the "Trieste" Mechanized Brigade was dissolved, it entered the "Friuli" Mechanized Brigade where it constituted the 35th "Riolo" Campaign Artillery Group. On 29th September 1993 it was reorganized into 21st "Trieste" Self-Propelled Campaign Artillery Regiment, armed with the M109L.
The Regiment has been employed in the "Ibis" operation in Somalia and in different operations for the public order on the national territory.
Since March 2001 it is included in the "Pinerolo" Mechanized Brigade and located in Foggia where it has substituted the 131st "Centauro" Regiment.
