The role of the Brigade in the CNPM The Sea Projection National Capability permits to the national Military Instrument to carry out operations with the intervention of a Landing Force in hostile contexts, in quality of an advanced component, in order to implement a predetermined mission. This Landing Force can operate according to the sea-basing concept (rapid deploy and employment of a joint Task Force from the sea, continuing to give support and protection to the employed assets, if there are not land bases on the area of intervention), in a multinational or coalition context.
The main element of this kind of military activities is constituted by a Landing Force (based on the “Serenissima” Regiment of the Army and the “San Marco” Brigade of the Italian Navy) that is able to integrate the capabilities of the national Military Instrument.
The commitment of the “Pozzuolo del Friuli” Brigade in this sector began in 2006 with the participation of all its regiments: “Serenissima” Marines Regiment, 4
th “Genova” Cavalry Regiment, 3
rd Sappers Engineer Regiment and “Voloire” Horseback Artillery Regiment; it guaranteed specialized capabilities to the Joint Forces component.
Origins By the decision of the Chief of the Defence General Staff the idea of a sea projection force derived; the document on “Inventing into security” traced the guidelines for the transformation process of the national military instrument. In 2006 a team group was founded to create a Sea Projection Force (FPM) that was firstly employed in Lebanon in the same year.
Role of the Brigade in amphibious actions The amphibious Operation is characterized by a strict relation between the maritime and the land component. It is a complex operation that requires a high integration level because the maritime component must be able to give the land component the necessary support in terms of logistics and of the operational functions. In particular:
- the amphibious Force is constituted by a naval force and a landing force, with the necessary support forces that are trained, organized and equipped for an amphibious operation;
- the amphibious Task Force is a military naval force aiming to carry out an amphibious operation;
- the Landing Force is constituted by units that can carry out land operations; it also includes air units and/or naval units assigned to the Landing Force Commander.
Thanks to the experience acquired in training activities (joint exercises with the Military Navy, such as “Open Sea”, or Armed Force as “Delta”) the “Pozzuolo del Friuli” Command Brigade and the Army units of the CNPM component support the lessons learned process aiming to improve and adapt the specialized capabilities of the Brigade in the framework of the amphibious operations.
