​Lieutenant General Maurizio Riccò joined the 165th “Fierezza” class at the Military Academy in Modena, the Artillery Branch School in Turin, the 122nd Italian Army Staff College, the 101st Senior Course at the NATO Defense College in Rome, the 61st session of “Centre des hautes études militaires” and the 64th session of '“Institut des hautes études de Défense nationale” in Paris.

During his military career, he served as:
- Battery Deputy Commander and Battery Commander to 185st Airborne Artillery Battalion “Viterbo” in Livorno;
- Battalion Commander and Regiment Commander of 132nd Armored Artillery Regiment “Ariete” in Maniago (PN);
- Brigade Commander of “Granatieri di Sardegna” Mechanized Brigade in Rome.

General Riccò also served as:
- Liaison Officer to UNOSOM II (United Nations Operation in Somalia II Mission) Headquarters in Mogadishu (Somalia);
- Military Observer to UNIKOM (United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission) in Iraq and Kuwait;
- Information and Operation Officer at the NATO Military Committee in Brussels;
- Military Assistant to the Logistic Deputy Chief of Staff to SFOR (Stabilization FORce) Headquarters in Sarajevo (Bi-H);
- Battalion Commander to ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) in Afghanistan;
- Chief of Fire Coordination Section of NRDC-ITA (NATO Rapid Deployable Corps-Italy) Headquarters in Solbiate Olona (VA);
- Coordinator Officer of NRDC-ITA Chief of Staff Office to ISAF Headquarters in Kabul (Afghanistan);
- Chief Plans and Policy to NRDC ITA Headquarters in Solbiate Olona (VA);
- Chief Plans to UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) Headquarters in Naqoura (Lebanon);
- Joint Task Force West Commander to UNIFIL in Shama (Lebanon);
- Chief of Staff of EUNAVFORMED Headquarters in Rome;
- Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Chief of Staff of NRDC-ITA Headquarters in Solbiate Olona (VA);
- Chief of the Logistic Department of Italian Army General Staff in Rome;
