MG Massimiliano QUARTO was born in Pordenone on 4 December 1971. After graduating at the “Nunziatella” Military School, he attended the 171st course at the Military Academy in Modena for two years being commissioned, at the end, as Cavalry Second Lieutenant. From 1991 to 1994, he attended the Junior Army Officer School of Specialization in Turin. In 1994, promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, he was assigned to “Guide” Cavalry Regiment (19th) in Salerno where he served as both Platoon commander and Deputy Squadron commander. In 1995, he was moved to Modena Military Academy where he held the positions of both platoon commander and assistant in Economics and Topography. In 1997, with the rank of Captain, he went back to “Guide” Cavalry Regiment (19th) as Reconnaissance Squadron Commander where he had the opportunity to serve several tours of duty in Bosnia (twice), Kosovo (twice) and FYROM.
After being through the 128th Basic Staff Course at the Italian Army War School, he was employed at the Italian General Army Staff in several positions: in the Planning Office as a Staff Officer of the National and International Planning Section (participating in numerous projects on new capabilities or assets such as RISTA, NBC, deployable Divisions), in the Italian Army Chief of Staff Office as Aide de Camp to Italian Army Chief of Staff and, afterwards, as Staff Officer and Speech Writer.
From August 2007 to July 2008, with the rank of major, he attended the Advanced Command and Staff Course 11 at the JSCSC in UK. Assigned to the 3rd UK Division, from August 2008 to September 2010, he served as Staff Officer in the G5 Plans branch. Returned to Italy, he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and appointed as Group Commander of Lancieri d’Aosta Regiment (6th).
Subsequently, until August 2013, he was Battalion Commander in the Military Academy of Modena. Significant staff assignments include serving as Military Assistant and Executive Office of the Commander of the Multinational Contingent of KFOR and Head of the Future Plans Section at the Planning Office of the Army General Staff. From 12 December 2014 to 09 October 2016 he was the 93rd Commander of the "Nizza Cavalleria" Regiment. Subsequently he was employed at the Joint Operations Command, first as Head of Joint Operations Center and then as Head of Operations Division (J3). From 27 February 2018 to 25 September 2020 he held the position of Chief General Office of the Italian Army Chief General Staff. As Brigadier General, from 09 September 2020 to 22 July 2022 as been Commanding Officer (CO) of the “Garibaldi” Bersaglieri Brigade. From July 2022 to June 2023, he held the position of Deputy Head of the General Planning and Budget Office of the Defense General Staff. Promoted Major General, on 9 June 2023 he assumed the position of Commander of the Vittorio Veneto Division.

Commemorative Cross for humanitarian operations;
Cross with Sword of the “Militense” Order of Merit of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
MG Quarto educational qualifications embrace: a degree in Economics at the University of Turin; a degree in International and Diplomatic Sciences at the University of Trieste; a Master degree in Strategic Sciences at University of Turin; a Master degree in Defence Studies at King’s College London. His hobbies and interests are family dominated and include sports such as basketball, sailing, cycling but also travel, geography and more relaxing fields like philosophy (Socrates, Plato and Kant), theology and economics. He is married to Maria Antonietta since 1996 and they have two children, Angela (23) and Francesco (21).
From the 15th of June 2025, he is the first Commander of the Multinational Division South in Florence.
