"Sic itur ad astra"
The Regiment derives from the 2nd Army Unit for the Repair of Light Aircrafts, formed on 1st March 1957 in Bologna. At first it was located at the O.A.R.E. establishment; later it has been gradually transferred to the "Fausto Pesci" airfield of Borgo Panigale, where the military Engineer Corps had prepared two hangars and an "Orais" prefabricated cabin.
In 1959 it was named 2nd Army Unit for the Repair of Light Aircrafts because it was given new tasks in terms of technical aeronautic second-level activities.
In 1970 the ALE Materials Service Command gave the 2nd Army Unit for the Repair of Light Aircrafts the task of oversee the executive activity for the changing of the L21B aircraft, in order to give it more power and to make it suitable for the mountain use in favour of the Alpine Troops.
Since 1976 the Unit had to manage the trials and the technical-administrative withdrawals of the SM-1019 aircrafts built by the SIAI Marchetti Company; that activity was then resumed for the AB412 and A129 helicopters starting from 1990.
In 1990, in occasion of the 39th anniversary from the institution of the Army Aviation in Viterbo, at the presence of the President, the Unit was given the War Flag.
After the staff reordering of the Armed Force, since 1st September 1996 the 2nd Unit was named 2nd Army Aviation Support "Orion" Regiment.
Over the recent years the 2nd "Orion" Regiment has participated in peacekeeping missions abroad with its soldiers and vehicles, contributing to complete the staff of other Air Units and intervening with contact teams.
It is now part of the executive bodies of the support logistic category; it is at the dependencies of the Army Aviation Materials Unit that is part of the Transport and Materials Department – Army Logistic Command.
