Francesco Paolo FIGLIUOLO

Lieutenant General

Lieutenant General Francesco Paolo FIGLIUOLO stands out for his remarkable military career and for the wide range of assignments and commissions he has been entrusted throughout his service. His responsibilities include significant appointments not only in the Army but also at joint and combined level.


As Mountain Troops Field Artillery Officer, he was first assigned in the “Aosta” artillery troops in Saluzzo (CN), before receiving full Command commission in Fossano (CN) in 1999-2000. In this period he also received the role of Commanding Officer in Kosovo, in the Serbian enclave of Goradzevac (Pèc).


He served as Commanding Officer of the 1st Mountain Troops Field Artillery Regiment in Fossano in 2004-2005; from 2009 to 2010 he served as Deputy Commander of the “TAURINENSE” Brigade, before being appointed as Commanding Officer of the same Brigade where he served until October 2011. 

Over the same period he received teaching assignments in the field of military education and training, from basic through advanced studies, at the School of Applied Military Studies in Turin as well as in the Operational Planning and Training Office at NATO level at the Joint Command South in Verona. Moreover, he was assigned as of Chief of the Coordination Office at the 4° Logistics Department of the Italian Army General Staff, where he later on served as Deputy Chief of Department (November 2011-2014) and Chief of Department (August 2015-May 2016).


From May 2016  to November 2017 he served as Executive Assistant of the Italian Chief of Defence.

His remarkable international experiences include the Command of the Italian contingent in Afghanistan (ISAF operation) from 2014 to 2015, the Command of the NATO Forces in Kosovo (September 2015-August 2016), the same Balkan region where he had served in the early 2000s as Commander of  the “Istrice” Task Force in Goradzevac and still earlier in the logistics organization of the NATO-SFOR Command in Sarajevo. 

Since November 7th 2018 he has been serving as the Italian Army Logistic Commander.

He was born and raised in Potenza, before joining the Military Academy in Modena. 

He lives in Turin with his wife Enza. He has two sons, Salvatore and Federico. He loves to read and practice both swimming and skiing  of which he’s also a military instructor.


EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Throughout his career, General FIGLIUOLO achieved the following qualifications:

• Degree in Political Sciences from the University of Salerno;

• Degree in Strategic Sciences and related 2° level Master from the University of Turin;

• Degree in International and Diplomatic Sciences from the University of Trieste. 

General FIGLIUOLO attended:

• The 119° Staff Course, the  3° Advanced Joint Staff Course, and the 92° Senior Course at the NATO Defence College in Rome;

• The “Ingenio vi virtute” advanced education course at the Link Campus University  in Rome.

He is the author of a number of papers and essays highlighting in-depth analysis on geo-political issues in the Defence field.


AWARDS AND DECORATIONS

General FIGLIUOLO was awarded a huge number of national and international medals and decorations, which include:

• Decoration of Knight of the Military Order of the Italian Republic;

• Army gold and silver cross of merit;

• Knight Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic;

• NATO Meritorius Service Medal;

• Golden Cross of Honour of the Bundeswehr;

• Legion of Merit of the United States of America.


MAIN INTERNATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS/FOREIGN OPERATIONS

• May ‘99 - September ’99: Logistics Staff Officer at the SFOR Multinational Command in Sarajevo;

• March ‘00 - July ’00: Commander of the  “Task Force Istrice” in Goradzevac (Pèc), Joint Guardian  operation in Kosovo;

• October ‘04 - February ’05: Commander of the Italian contingent in Afghanistan, ISAF operation;

• September ‘14 - August ’15: Force Commander of the  NATO – KFOR  operation  in Kosovo.
