Major General Maurizio Riccò graduated from the Military Academy and the School of Applied Military Studies, where he received his commission as 1st Lieutenant (Artillery, Airborne). He also attended the Army Staff College, the Senior Course at the NATO Defence College in Rome, the Institut des hautes études de défense nationale and the Centre des hautes études militaires in Paris.
During his career Maj. Gen. Riccò served as Company Commander, 185th airborne artillery Battalion; Company Commander, Mounted Artillery Regiment; Commanding Officer, 1st/132nd Armoured Artillery Battalion; Commanding Officer, 132nd Armoured Artillery Regiment; and Commander, "Granatieri di Sardegna" Mechanized Brigade. During this last appointment, he was also the Commander of the Homeland Security Operation for Central Italy.
Maj. Gen. Riccò has gained considerable international experience. He served as Italian LNO at UNOSOM II HQ in Mogadishu (Somalia); Military Observer at UNIKOM in Iraq and Kuwait; Operations/Intelligence Staff Officer at the Italian Military Representative to NATO Military Committee in Brussels; Military Assistant to ACOS Support at SFOR HQ in Sarajevo; Commander of the Italian ISAF IV Battle Group in Kabul (Afghanistan); SO1 FCOORD OPS and – at the same time - SO1 COORD to COS when NRDC-ITA led ISAF VIII; ACOS G5 Plans and Policy; DCOS OPS at HQ NATO Rapid Deployable Corps-Italy (HQ NRDC-ITA); Chief J5 and later Commander, Joint Task Force West taken by the “Granatieri di Sardegna” Brigade for the United Nations Interim Mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL); Chief of Staff to the European Naval Force Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED) HQ in Rome; Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. Finally, from February 2017 to November 2018, he was the Chief of Staff, HQ NRDC-ITA. From December 3, 2018, to January 9, 2022, he was the Chief of the Logistic Division at the Italian Army General Staff.
He is the co-author of the articles “Effects Based Operations: Dreams and reality for simple victories” and “The new NATO Strategic Concept: between the justification of its existence and its being source of new ideas for facing future challenges” published on “Rivista Militare” and “Informazioni della Difesa”.
Since January 10, 2022, he is the Army Logistic Commander.
