The Commander

Lieutenant General

Lieutenant General Gianpaolo MIRRA was born in San Martino Sannita (Benevento) on September 17, 1965.

He attended the 167th course of the Military Academy of Modena from 1985 to 1987, after which he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Engineer Corps. He then attended the Application School in Turin, where he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1989.

His training includes basic military engineering courses, MINEX Instructor qualification, explosive ordnance disposal certification, physical education instructor, parachutist course, and an English language course at the Army Foreign Languages School. He also completed the Staff Course, the Advanced Joint Staff Course (I.SSMM. Interforces), and the Resource Management Course.

He served in the 6th Pioneer Engineer Regiment, holding both command and staff positions. In 1996, as a Company Commander, he was deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina during Operation “Joint Endeavour." From 2005 to 2006, he served as Battalion Commander and Commander of the Multinational Engineering Group in Afghanistan as part of Operation “ISAF."

From 2009 to 2012, he commanded the 21st Engineer Sappers Regiment. During this period, he was employed as Grouping Commander in Operation “Safe Streets" and also participated in Operation “ISAF" in Afghanistan as Commander of the “Engineer" Task Force.

As a Staff Officer, he held positions at the Army General Staff in the Infrastructure sector, serving as Staff Officer and Section Chief. From 2012 to 2015, with the rank of Colonel, he was Head of the Infrastructure Office at the IV Logistics Department.

From 2015 to 2017, he commanded the Mechanized Brigade “Pinerolo," with which, in 2016, he was deployed to Afghanistan as Commander of the Train Advise Assist Command West, under NATO-led Operation “Resolute Support."

From 2017 to 2020, he was appointed Deputy Head of the Infrastructure Department of the Army General Staff.

Promoted to Major General in 2019, he served as Commander of the Engineer Command from July 1, 2020, to March 21, 2024.

From March 22, 2024, to September 29, 2025, he served as Deputy Commander and Commander of the Territorial Area of the Operational Land Forces Command.

On April 10, 2024, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant ​General.

Since September 30, 2025, he has been the Commander of National Territorial Command (COMTER).

He holds degrees in Civil Engineering, Strategic Sciences, and International and Diplomatic Sciences. He also earned a Master's degree in Strategic Sciences and in Strategic-Military International Studies, and is a Legal Advisor in International Humanitarian Law.

General MIRRA has been awarded the following decorations:

He is married to Mrs. Simona and has a 22-year-old son, Giansimone.​
