Uniforms in the 2nd World War

Contenuto pagina

After the radical "Baistrocchi reform" of 1931 that had revised and made more beautiful the uniform of the twenties, the uniform of the soldiers were revised again in order to adequate it to the conflict.

The uniforms of the Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Troops were different from each other for the quality of the cloth and the workmanship. The Officers and the Non-Commissioned Officers used the "cordellino" cloth with a colour that was lighter than the uniform of the Troops. Moreover, there was not a "summer" uniform on the national territory. It was possible not to wear the jacket with the "marching" uniform, but trousers and footwear remained unchanged.

Infantryman of the 17th 'Acqui' Regiment

The Model 40 Uniform and its derived models were different from the previous one because they had not the coloured collar or the black velvet one bordered by the colours of the weapons (only for the troops), now simplified in a band without embellishments. Later the collar patches and the flames with three tips of the Cavalry regiments of "Nice", "Piedmont", "Savoy", "Genova", "Novara" and "Aosta" were born. The troop uniform was composed of a jacket with three buttons and four patch pockets with central rolled pleat and the flap closed by a small button. The trousers were different for the infantry and the cavalry and they were tighten at the calf by puttee bands or by leather socks or leggings. The jacket was partially lined. The open breasts of the jacket were cut to make it possible the closure of the neck and there was a buttonhole on the left lapel. On the back there was a wide pocket closed by small buttons on the sides. A cloth strap with buttons tightened the uniform at the waist. It ruined quickly because low end materials were used to make the uniform; it proved to be inadequate to all situations.

Officer of the Motorists

The Officers and the Non-Commissioned Officers were given the troop uniforms and they were also authorized to "adapt" the elegant grey "cordellino" cloth to the war uniform. The quantity of the small details to adjust multiplied by the number of the conscripted Officers and the Non-Commissioned Officers, the difficulty or the disregard for the severe rules considered useless for a war that had to be fast and painless, led up to mix different clothing that remained in circulation for the duration of the conflict. Overseas, in eastern Africa such as Libya, the National uniforms were similar to the continental ones but packed in khaki canvas. The jackets were called Saharan and they were characterized by largeness, sleeves closed by cuffs, the absence of ranks substituted by a star and the decoration of the Army on the black epaulettes; the collar had got large lapels. The troop wore a shirt that was similar to the European uniform. But at that front where the sun ruined the cloths, the uniforms of the soldiers changed quickly colour and composition. Shorts and sandals appeared.
