End of Mission:
After the tragic events occurred in Palestinian camps of Sabra and Shatila, in the western suburbs of Beirut, and the talks between the Lebanese Government and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the implementation of Resolution 521 by the UN Security Council, the Lebanese Government asked some Countries (including Italy) for a multinational Force that had to be deployed in planned locations. The aim was to ensure the reestablishment of the sovereignty and the authorities of the Lebanese Government in the area of Beirut as well as guarantee the safety of the population. The Italian mission, named ITALCON, took place on 24th September 1982 to 6th March 1984 and 8.345 soldiers were employed.
