The Library is at the dependencies of the Historic Office of the General Staff of the Army and it is specialized in military history and other military subjects. However it is possible to find several books about other themes, grouped in the following categories:

Among the most interesting works in the Library we can point out:
- "De Bello Persico" ("The Persian War"), "De Bello Gothorum" ("The Gothic War") and "De Bello Vandilico" ("The Vandal War") that represent an important trilogy written by the byzantine historian Procopio of Cesarea. It is the oldest work of those stored in the Library;
- the "Divina Commedia" ("Divine Comedy") in the particular edition of 1529 with the famous comment of Cristoforo Landino;
- the famous "Encyclopédie ou dictionnaire raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et des Métiers" ("Encyclopaedia or systematic dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts") of Diderot and D'Alambert, in its first three complete editions;
- the great work "War of the Rebellion – Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies", in 127 volumes and 1 atlas;
- the "Rélation de la Bataille de Marengo" ("Report of the Marengo Battle") written by General Berthier;
- the "Teatro della Terra Universale" ("Universal Theatre of the Earth") of Abraham Ortelio (1605) that represents the first modern geographic atlas;
- the "Cosmographia,sive description universi orbis" ("Cosmography, or description of the whole world") of the mathematicians Pietro Apiano and Gemma Frisio;
- the "Codice Atlantico" ("Atlantic Code") of Leonardo Da Vinci, reproduced by the Lincei Royal Academy, in a limited edition of only 280 copies;
- the official Reports of the Russian General Staff and Japanese General Staff about the War of 1904-1905;
- the collections of Laws and Decrees by the Italian States before the Unification;
- Italian and French Treaties of the 17th and 18th century about the Engineer Corps and the fortifications.
The Central Military Library aims always to the cultural updating of the General Staff of the Army but it also gives the chance to consult the books. Moreover, since 2001 it has been included in the network of the National Library Service through the RMS Pole of the "Alexandrine" Library of "La Sapienza" University in Rome.
