Golden Medal to the Army Valour
Constantly present in the operations outside the national borders, this Cavalry Regiment participated in all the operational activities related to the crisis in Kosovo. On the occasion of the emergency for the refugees that came to the FYROM from Kosovo, the men of the 19th "Guide Cavalrymen" Regiment worked with extraordinary effort in order to alleviate the pains of the population supporting it in the refugee camps. In the operations to enter Kosovo, after the signature of the peace agreements, the "Guides" constituted the vanguard of the Italian Brigade and the concrete possibility of threatening actions against the units in movement and the contrast between the Serbian and the Albanian-Kosovan troops, determining the clarification of the situation and the security in favour of the other units of the contingent. During the five months in Kosovo, the Regiment operated with serenity, firmness and determination and it managed to impose justice and mutual respect to the opposed groups, particularly in the area around the city of Djakovica where there were serious episodes of intolerance; it assumed the disposal in a short time in a very difficult situation operating with efficiency. It patrolled the territory, sometimes with dangerous actions of sweep for the commandeering of weapons and ammunition, interruption of illegal activities of organized crime, the liberation and the safety of members of the Serbian ethnic group, the arrest of criminals. In spite of the frequent moments of tension and conflict with the militia that tried to control the area, the men of the Regiment maintained an example firmness, highlighting the professionalism and the reliability of the Italian soldier. Generous with the poor and needy people, determined against the unjust people, the men of the "Guides" imposed themselves for availability and humanity, always maintaining equidistance between the different ethnical groups recognized by all the opposed groups; in the fire conflicts where it was involved, the Regiment always highlighted extraordinary tenacity and operational capabilities, imposing with determination and courage total respect of the agreements. Thanks to the continuous efforts of its men, it restored legality and peace in all the area hit by the war events. Example of solid cavalry, motivated and resolute in the actions, it contributed to the success of the operations in Fyrom and in Kosovo, increasing the prestige of Italy in the international context. Soon after the earthquake in Friuli on 6th May 1976, it reached some devastated areas far from the main communication ways, organizing rescues and restoring connections. With courage and generosity, it worked hard to rescue the populations hit by the disaster giving them moral support and material with a valid contribution in restoring the essential social services. On foot or horseback, it distinguished for continuous proofs of valour and firmness. In the battle for the revival, with a brillian attack of some units, it occupied Sacile making the passage of the 4th Cavalry Division easier. In the first period of the Greek Campaign, with admirable spirit of sacrifice, it intervened with the infantrymen in battles against enemy positions; during the retreat to Kastaniani, in an heroic defense it gave blood contribution and glory to its history. The "Guide Cavalrymen" Squadrons Group – "Ariete" Division, of the 5th Army Corps, along with other units of the Army, it showed generous altruism and heroic abnegation in rescuing the populations hit by the disaster in Vajont, in spite of inner dangers and inconveniences.
