"Ad ogni costo"

On 1^st October 1922 the 3^rd Engineer Group of Army Corps was constituted in Verona with the sappers battalion and the telegraphists battalion, formed in the 5^th Army Corps on 1^st April 1920. On 1^st November 1926 it became 4^th Engineer Regiment. Changed into a Mobilization Centre, at the outbreak of the Second World War it formed, trained and sent more than ten engineer battalions of different specialties to all the war theatres; they fought in Albania, Northern Africa and Russia where the 2^nd Engineer Mixed Battalion of the "Tridentina" Alpine Division received the Silver Medal to the Military Valour, guarded today by the 4^th Regiment. In September 1943 it was dissolved after the events determined by the armistice.

After the reorganization of the Army, on 7^th November 1975 the 4^th "Orta" Pioneers Engineer Battalion was constituted in Trento, by transformation of the 14^th Pioneers Engineer Battalion of Army Corps, at the dependencies of the Engineer Command of the 4^th Alpine Army Corps. The unit, formed by a command, a company command and three pioneers companies, was the heir of the traditions of the 4^th Engineer Regiment receiving its Flag on 12^th November 1976. The Battalion distinguished in the rescue activities in favour of the population hit by the earthquake in Friuli, deserving the second Bronze Medal to the Army Valour.

From 14^th to 28^th October 1992 the "Orta" participated in the "Sicilian Vespers" Operation, patrolling the territory in the province of Ragusa. In the same year the unit was employed, with men and vehicles, in the "Pellicano" humanitarian Operation in Albania.

After the reorganization of the Army, the Battalion lost its independency on 3^rd October 1993 and its personnel formed the 1^st Engineer Regiment. The Battalion and the Regiment were later dissolved, on 13^th October 1995.

The 4^th Pioneers Engineer Regiment was reconstituted in Palermo on 19^th September 1992 with the personnel of the preexistent 51^st "Simeto" Battalion. The Regiment was soon employed in the "Sicilian Vespers" Operation in Palermo. On 24^th October 1995 it received the Flag of the dissolved "Orta" Pioneers Engineer Battalion.

On 28^th April 2003 it was given the Golden Medal to the Army Valour for it continuous interventions supporting the Sicilian population in the Etna and Stromboli emergency.
