"Ad ogni costo"
On 1st October 1922 the 3rd Engineer Group of Army Corps was constituted in Verona with the sappers battalion and the telegraphists battalion, formed in the 5th Army Corps on 1st April 1920. On 1st November 1926 it became 4th Engineer Regiment. Changed into a Mobilization Centre, at the outbreak of the Second World War it formed, trained and sent more than ten engineer battalions of different specialties to all the war theatres; they fought in Albania, Northern Africa and Russia where the 2nd Engineer Mixed Battalion of the "Tridentina" Alpine Division received the Silver Medal to the Military Valour, guarded today by the 4th Regiment. In September 1943 it was dissolved after the events determined by the armistice.
After the reorganization of the Army, on 7th November 1975 the 4th "Orta" Pioneers Engineer Battalion was constituted in Trento, by transformation of the 14th Pioneers Engineer Battalion of Army Corps, at the dependencies of the Engineer Command of the 4th Alpine Army Corps. The unit, formed by a command, a company command and three pioneers companies, was the heir of the traditions of the 4th Engineer Regiment receiving its Flag on 12th November 1976. The Battalion distinguished in the rescue activities in favour of the population hit by the earthquake in Friuli, deserving the second Bronze Medal to the Army Valour.
From 14th to 28th October 1992 the "Orta" participated in the "Sicilian Vespers" Operation, patrolling the territory in the province of Ragusa. In the same year the unit was employed, with men and vehicles, in the "Pellicano" humanitarian Operation in Albania.
After the reorganization of the Army, the Battalion lost its independency on 3rd October 1993 and its personnel formed the 1st Engineer Regiment. The Battalion and the Regiment were later dissolved, on 13th October 1995.
The 4th Pioneers Engineer Regiment was reconstituted in Palermo on 19th September 1992 with the personnel of the preexistent 51st "Simeto" Battalion. The Regiment was soon employed in the "Sicilian Vespers" Operation in Palermo. On 24th October 1995 it received the Flag of the dissolved "Orta" Pioneers Engineer Battalion.
On 28th April 2003 it was given the Golden Medal to the Army Valour for it continuous interventions supporting the Sicilian population in the Etna and Stromboli emergency.
