The Army Aviation Command was instituted on 1^st October 1997 in Viterbo, at the dependencies of the Operational Land Support Command. It substituted the previous Army Light Aviation Inspectorate that had been created in 1962 and renamed in 1993 Army Aviation Inspectorate located in Rome.

By Decree of 1^st June 1999, the Minister of Defence has launched a series of measures that reshaped the composition of the Cavalry, making the Army Aviation one of its specialties with the name of "Air Cavalry".

Since 1^st January 2000 the Command has been named "Air Cavalry Command", at the dependencies of the Operational Land Support Forces Command.

When the Supports Command was abolished, the Army Aviation Command was at the direct dependencies of the Operational Land Forces Command, becoming an Intermediate Command.

Since 1^st December 2003 it was renamed Army Aviation Command. ​
