In seven months of hard campaign on the Russian front, it showed itself as powerful war unit with energies, strong voluntary and legendary courage. During the most difficult maneuvre of retreat from the Don front, its "Vestone", "Verona" and "Val Chiese" Battalions gave proof of their war qualities in spite of the adverse weather conditions. Operating with ability on a dangerous territory, in many battles in Posto Jalyj, Scheljakino, Maiakeiewa, Arnautowo and Nikolajewka, they always hindered the enemy forces supported by armoured vehicles. Thanks to their valour, spirit of abnegation, courage and enthusiasm, they crushed the enemy troops limiting their violent advance and opening a way to save Italian and allied units. The three battalions, faithful to their ancient tradition, went beyond their heroic victorious war past with legendary valour. On the Greek front, in fifty days of battle against the enemy, the 5th Alpine Regiment with its "Morbegno", "Tirano" and "Edolo", overpassing difficult weather and territorial conditions, faced the enemy heroically. In spite of the consistent losses, it continued to fight for the honour of the Homeland and according to the strong alpine tradition. Later on another important mountain area, it reaffirmed its fame of warrior valour with glorious and tenacious defences and victorious offensives. Extraordinary example of great military values.
