Colonel Alessandro SCIARPA (Logistic Corps)

Head of the Faculty:
  • reports to the Chief of Course Management
  • signs, on behalf of the Commander, all the documents of the Faculty, within the limits of the powers delegated;
  • Coordinates and manages the activities of the teachers in synergy with the Head of the Training Department, who draws up the curricula;
  • is assisted by the Teaching Departments and by the Teaching Equipment and Language Section.
Colonel Alessandro Sciarpa was born on 25 February 1966 in Terni. He attended the 167th “Fermezza” course at the Italian Army Military Academy in Modena from 1985 to 1987 and the School of Applied Military Logistics from 1987 to 1989. His military training also includes the 2nd Technical Course for Logistics Officers, the 38th Basic Course for Information Officers and an English language course at the Italian Army Foreign Language School. Col. Sciarpa has attended the 128th Army General Staff Course, the 3rd Multidisciplinary Course, the 7th Joint Staff Course, the NATO Logistics Course, the Resource Management Educational Programme and the NATO Expeditionary Logistics Course. During his military career, Colonel Sciarpa has held several command positions at platoon and company level in the Logistics Battalions of the Army Brigades “Goito” in Milan and “Legnano” in Presezzo, near Bergamo and Solbiate Olona, Varese. He also commanded the 7th Transport Battalion “Monte Amiata” in Florence as Chief of the Operations, Training and Information Section and as Victualling Officer.

He also served as Contract Manufacturing Officer, Head of the Supply, Automotive, Engineering and Fuel/Lubricants Section and Head of the Manufacturing Section at the 3rd Supply and Maintenance Centre in Milan. Col. Sciarpa has also served as Head of the Automotive Section at the Joint Intelligence Centre of the 2nd Information and Security Division of the Army General Staff in Rome. He has held the positions of General Staff Officer in the Capability Development and Financial Planning Division of the Italian Army General Staff and in the Planning Branch in Rome. He was the project officer for logistics planning for NATO and EU Forces. At the same time, Colonel Sciarpa served on the NATO Stockpile Planning Committee and as the Italian national delegate to the NATO Logistics Coordination Board Committee and the Logistics Planning Advisory Committee.

He has provided support to the NATO International Staff and Military Staff in the area of Allied Force Planning for the Land Component and the Theatre Logistic Support Component. Colonel Sciarpa also commanded the “Ariete” Logistic Battalion in Maniago, Piacenza from 10 October to 18 July 2010. From 9 August 2010 to 10 August 2013, he served as Staff Officer, Engineer Sector, at the NATO Supreme Allied Command Transformation (ACT) Logistics Office in Norfolk, USA. At ACT, he coordinated Allied Forces Logistic Training at the NATO School in Oberammergau, Germany, and the NATO Communications and Information Systems School in Latina, Italy. He has been the custodian of the major Allied joint publications that form part of the Allied Joint Doctrine. He has also promoted more than 40 multinational logistics projects under the Smart Defence Initiative. On 30 August 2013, he took over the command of the 8th Transport Regiment in Remanzacco, Udine.

On 1 July 2015, following the reorganisation of the aforementioned 8th Transportation Regiment, he became the first Commander of the “Pozzuolo del Friuli” Logistics Regiment. On 5 September 2016 he was appointed Lecturer in Logistics and on 17 December 2018 Professor of Logistics at the Army Training Command and the School of Applied Military Studies in Turin. On 2 September 2019, he was appointed Head of the Doctrine and Procedures Department, a dual position. On 1 November 2020, he will assume the dual role of Head of the Doctrine and Procedures Department and Professor of Logistic Support. He has been deployed overseas on a number of occasions and has served as:
Transport Platoon Commander in Somalia for the IBIS II mission; Observer for the European Community Monitoring Mission in the former Yugoslavia; Deputy Commander of the Forward Support Group in East Timor; Deputy Head of the National Intelligence Cell in Kosovo; Logistics Commander of the UNIFIL Joint Task Force in Lebanon - Sector West in 2010 and 2014.

Col. Alessandro SCIARPA holds a Master of Arts in Applied Industrial Technologies and a Bachelor of Arts in Crisis Management Planning from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and a Level II Master’s Degree in Strategic Science from the niversity of Turin. He also holds a Master’s Degree in International Strategic Military Studies from the University of Rome “LUISS - Guido Carli”. He is a qualified Military Legal Adviser and Military Professor.

Colonel Sciarpa is married to Mrs. Monica REBUTTINI and they have one daughter, Sara.
