"Per aethera loquimor"
The 1st Signals Regiment was constituted on 15th November 1926 in Rome as a consequence of the transformation of the telegraphists engineer regiment formed in November 1919 on the base of the 3rd telegraphists Battalion. After changes in components, the 1st Radio-telegraphists Regiment was dissolved on 28th October 1932, transferring men and materials to other Engineer Regiments.
On 1st December 1948 the Connections Regiment was constituted in Milan for the needs of the 3rd Territorial Military Command.
In 1953, after the constitution of the Signals Corps, the Unit was named "3rd Signals Battalion". With the reorganization that reduced the number of the Territorial Military Commands and originated the 3rd Army Corps in Milan and the 6th Army Corps in Florence, The Battalion was renamed "3rd Signals Army Corps Battalion".
After the reorganization in 1975, the Unit took the traditions of the 1st Radio-telegraphist Regiment and was named 3rd "Spluga" Signals Battalion. On 23rd May 1976 it received the War Flag.
By decree of 18th October 1976 it received the heraldic insignia with the motto "per aethera loquimur". Between 9th and 12th June 1988, for its work during the flood in Valtellina, it received the honorary citizenship by the Municipalities of San Giacomo Filippo – Campodolcino – Madesimo – Chiavenna, creating a twinning with the Montana Community of Val Chiavenna where the Pass of Spluga is situated.
On 15th October 1995 the Unit became a Regiment with the name of 1st Signals Regiment.
The personnel of the Regiment has participated in all the operations outside the national territory, with small nucleus and minor units, starting with the "IBIS" Operation in Somalia in 1993. The Regiment was also employed for the "ALBA" Operation in April-August 1997, giving C4 support to the Multinational Protection Force (FMP) Command.
On 28th November 1998 the Regiment received the honorary citizenship by the Milan Municipality.
Since June 1999 the 1st Regiment has provided C4 support to the "Joint Guardian" Operation in Kosovo and Albania. In particular the "Spluga" Battalion Command was employed in May-November 1999 and March-July 2000 in Kosovo and from February to June 2001 in Albania, Kosovo and Bosnia.
On 27th August 2001 the Regiment was included in the "Sempione" Battalion, constituted by two Companies.
