The Engineer regiments have had a complicated history. The first regiment was constituted on 30th September 1848. Before that moment companies and battalions have had difficult vicissitudes of constitution and dissolution. The 2nd Regiment was formed on 2nd May 1860 when the Emilia and Tuscany Units were included in the Corps. In 1873 the Pontoons specialty left the Artillery to become part of the Engineer. In 1883 there were four regiments that became five in 1893.
A lot of new units were created during the First World War when the Engineer was the protagonist of the war of mines, in the installation of active and passive obstacles.
After having passed the strain of the War, the Engineer was reorganized until when the regiments were reconstituted with a rule in 1926. Later there were suppressions and changes until the eve of the Second World War when there were 18 regiments, two of miners, two pontoons regiments, one of railway pioneers in addition to other companies and battalions.
In the same period, other legendary units added to the Engineer such as the sappers battalions that in Northern Africa covered themselves with glory. The armistice closed the first phase of the War, opening a difficult period of material and moral reconstruction of the Corps. Step by step the regiments were reconstituted and they intervened nationally in case of earthquakes, floods and landslides.
Today, after subsequent rearrangements, the Engineer regiments represent important instruments with great technological and combat capabilities, ready to carry out humanitarian and combat tasks.
At present there are 12 regiments and their Flags are awarded with 3 Silver Medals, 11 Bronze Medals, 2 War Crosses to Military Valour, 2 Silver Medals and 7 Bronze Medals to Army Valour, 1 Silver Medal and 3 Bronze Medals to Civil Valour.
