After the expansion of the self-declared Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, already ISIS), in Iraq and Syria, the United States have created a Coalition of Willing (COW) that aims to provide the necessary operational support to the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), in order to defeat the terrorist organization, make safe the borders, re-establish the sovereignty of the State, create Armed Forces and Police Forces that can guarantee the security of the Nation.

In particular, in the context of the international mission "Inherent Resolve", through the operation "Prima Parthica" Italy provides Staff to the multinational Commands in Kuwait and Iraq (Erbil and Baghdad) as well as assets and capacities of Training and Assisting to the Iraqi Armed Forces and Police Forces.

Moreover, the Army also provides a logistic-administrative disposition of about 250 units.

This national disposition operates in the three locations, especially in Erbil, where there are training courses in favour of the Peshmerga, and in Baghdad where there are Advising activities for the Special Forces. ​
