On 6th 2009, after the violent earthquake in the Region Abruzzo, the Operation "Gran Sasso" started. To the order of the Joint Operational High Command (COI), the Armed Force has provided assets from the 33rd field artillery regiment, the 123rd "Chieti" infantry regiment and the 9th alpine infantry regiment, to carry out activities linked to the safety of human life as well as the setting up of a makeshift camp and aircrafts with fixed and rotating wing provided by Aves Command. Later assets of the Engineer Corp have been deployed for the removal of the ruins, the reactivation of the practicability, the research of possible survivors and the management of the railway line Terni-L'Aquila. By Decree n.3755 of 15th April 2009 issued by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the number of the personnel in the Operation "Safe Roads" was increased in order to prevent profiteering activities in the impassable and empty houses.
When the state of emergency ended, claimed on 31st March 2010, the "Gran Sasso" Operation was replaced by "Aquila" Operation. For that Operation, the Decree n. 4013 of 23rd March 2012 established a contingent to remove the ruins, maintain the public order in the historic centre and protect urban villages.
On 31st December 2012 the need of removing the ruins ended.
In accordance with the Decree-Law n.150/2013, that established
- the employment of a contingent for the surveillance service around the Palace of Justice and the Court of Appeal of L'Aquila, until 31st December 2014;
- the suspension of the other surveillance services since 1st April 2014,
the grouping was reorganized in the square of L'Aquila in order to carry out defence services.
