Specialized training for the Italian Army Alpine Troops, ready to operate in Arctic climates.

Volpe Bianca Exercise: special training for Alpine Troops, ready for challenges beyond the Arctic Circle

“Winter resolve" activity was carried out as part of “Volpe Bianca" annual exercise on Mountain Warfare in winter environment. The exercise will consist of three events, organized by Italian Army's Alpine Troops. This first stage involved a Battle Group from 2nd Alpine Regiment, who performed a Mountain Warfare training in extreme weather conditions, between Val di Susa and Val Chisone, alpine valleys in the Cottian Alpes. This activity will prepare the troops for “Nordic Response" international exercise, which will take place in Norway and will involve more than 20,000 soldiers from air force, land force and navy from several NATO countries.

In the next days, “Volpe Bianca" exercise will continue with two other important activities: “Ice Patrol", involving a military patrol of 8 members for each Alpine Troops' Regiment in a reconnaissance mission along a 20 km route, covered in three days and two nights; “Ice Challenge", a military version of biathlon combining alpine skiing and target shooting.

The exercise will have a total duration of two months, involving more than 1,000 Alpine soldiers from “Julia" and “Taurinense" Brigades and from the Alpine Training Centre, as well as units from Romanian and French Armies and several Army observers from other NATO countries.

The core concepts will be: “verticality", i.e. the ability to operate at altitude; “Articity", i.e. the ability to operate in extreme weather conditions for lengthy periods; “internationality", i.e. interoperability with allied and partner armies.

There will be many additional events, like the concerts of “Julia" and “Taurinense" brigades' Brass Bands in the exercise locations. The closing ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, February 25 in San Candido (Bolzano – South Tyrol), in a joint event with the ending of Winter “Alpiniadi" organized by the National Alpine Association.
