Silver Medal to the Army Valour
This Unit was employed in Bosnia-Herzegovina on the framework of the IFOR and SFOR Operations carrying out its duties with sense of abnegation; in particular it had to repair and rebuilt several railway lines that could not be used because of four years of violent war. Even if it operated in dangerous areas characterized by difficult environmental and operational context, its men showed extraordinary valour, courage, sense of duty and dedication, restoring 290 km of the main Bosnian railway lines and controlling for the NATO the works of the civil enterprises along the Volinja – Banialica – Doboj line. For that reason, on the international level, the Regiment gained unconditioned recognitions contributing to increase the prestige of the Italian Armed Forces and in general of all the Nation. In the campaign to the eastern front (Russia) it supplied the combat troops. During the battle of Don it had to defend an important position repelling the enemy several times even if the enemy was superior in number of men and vehicles. In epic competition with the infantrymen, it fought for more than three days resisting until when it retreated to avoid the encirclement. (Area of Krasnogorowka, December 1942. Golden Cross to the Army Merit
Already employed in Bosnia, the railway pioneers engineer regiment intervened by NATO request with its contingent in Kosovo in order to restore the railway network and for the movement of military convoys in favour of KFOR, UNMIK and humanitarian organization. In more than 18 months the Unit controlled about 200 km and it rebuilt other 15 km; it moved over 5,000 convoys transporting over a million of tons of goods and 210,000 passengers, in very difficult conditions and dangerous situations. In particular it was very important its contribution for the freedom of movement of ethnical minorities after having restored the connection of the passenger train between the stations of Kosovo Polje and Zvecan. The railway pioneers engineer regiment gave also its contribution in restoring the economic activities in Kosovo. Moreover the Unit had an determinant role in the positive development of the KFOR mission, raising appreciation for its abnegation, technical capability and great professionalism. Its efforts raised gratitude by the population and respect by the allies, increasing the prestige of the Italian Army and the Nation in a multinational context. (Kosovo, 4th April 2001).

After the collapse of the railway bridge on the river Toce in Verbania, caused by the flooding in October 1977, the railway pioneers engineer regiment used a new material for bridge for the first time in Europe. In that way it was promptly restored the Milano-Domodossola line and the regular circulation of the trains until the reconstruction of all the bridge. The building and dismantling activity required to pass the enormous technical difficulties due to the lack of previous experiences and the difficult environmental conditions. The work showed the high level of professionalism of the Regiment and raised the unanimous recognition of the population. (Area of Verbania, 1978 – 1982).
