"Impervia cedant"
Constituted on 1st November 1895 as Miners Regiment, it provided personnel to the contingents employed in the Italian-Turkish war in 1911-1912.
During the First World War it mobilized nine miners battalions operating in different sectors of the front.
Changed into an Engineer Miners Regiment in 1919, it was dissolved on 30th September 1922 and reconstituted as 5th Engineer Group of Army Corps. Reorganized several times in the dependent units, it provided personnel and vehicles for the Campaign of Eastern Africa in 1935-1936. It continued to operate as mobilization centre during the Second World War, with the headquarters in Trieste, until its dissolution after the armistice in September 1943.
Reconstituted in Belluno on 5th January 1951 as 5th Pioneers Engineer Regiment, on 1st April 1954 it was renamed 5th Engineer Group, located in Vicenza; on 1st April 1955 it became 5th Engineer Regiment located in Udine.
On 1st January 1976, with the reorganization of the Army, the 5th "Bolsena" Pioneers Engineer Battalion was constituted. Moved from Udine to Foggia in 1991, on 31st August 1995 it was moved to Legnano (VR) at the dependencies of the Military Region Command-North East. On 1st December 1997 it was incorporated in the new-formed Engineer Group of the Land Forces Supports Command.
On 1st December 2000 it was named 5th "Bolsena" Paratroopers Sappers Engineer Battalion and it was included in the "Folgore" Paratroopers Brigade. On 1st June 2001 it became 8th Battalion.
On 1st January 2003 the unit was reconstituted as a Regiment with the headquarters in Macomer (NU), by transformation of the preexistent 45th "Reggio" Regiment.
The War Flag is decorated with two Bronze Medals to the Army Valour (Friuli-Irpinia), a Silver Medal to the Civil Valour (Veneto) and a Certificate of Public Merit to the Civil Valour.
