"Ferro et corde frangit hostes"
The 31st Tanks Regiment was constituted on 15th July 1937 in Siena as 31st Tank drivers Infantry Regiment, with two battalions from the 3rd and the 4th Regiment. Its history, recent but glorious, followed the 131st "Centauro" armoured Division. The Regiment participated in the occupation of Albania in 1939; it fought in 1940-1941 on the Greek front, where it deserved the Silver Medal to the Military Valour, and in 1941 on the Yugoslavian front; IN 1942-1943 it participated in the final phase of the campaign in Northern Africa where it was dissolved (12th April 1943). In the same day the Deposit of the Regiment reconstituted the Command of the 31st Tanks Infantry in Siena that remained until 8th September 1944.
On 15th September it was reconstituted in Verona as 31st Tanks drivers Regiment, as well as the "Centauro". On 10th October 1955 it moved to Bellinzago Novarese and in December 1958 it was named 31st Tanks Regiment. With the organic reorganization of the Division as "Standard NATO" armoured Great Unit, the Regiment was included in the 3rd armoured Brigade, with the 28th Bersaglieri Battalion at its dependencies. On 1st October 1968, with the dissolution of the 3rd armoured Brigade, the 31st Regiment passed again at the direct dependencies of the Division command.
After the reorganization in 1975, on 20th October it was dissolved and its Flag and traditions were entrusted to the 1st "Medaglia d'Oro Cracco" Tanks Battalion, while the regiment command constituted the command of the 31st "Curtatone" Armoured Brigade for the "Centauro" Mechanized Division. On 1st September 1993, the Battalion reentered the reconstituted Regiment with personnel of the 101st "Zappalà" Tanks Battalion.
On 2nd October 1997, after the reorganization of the Armed Forces, the Regiment moved from Bellinzago Novarese to Altamura and it was included in the "Pinerolo" Brigade.
On 1st January 2011 it passed at the dependencies of the Cavalry School.
Since 28th February 2017 it depends on the "Pinerolo" Brigade.
