Rosario Castellano

Lieutenant General


Lieutenant General Rosario Castellano was born on 17th November 1959 in Castellammare di Stabia (NA).

He attended the 160th Course at the Military Academy of Modena and the Army Application School of Turin (1978 - 1982).

In 1983 he was assigned to the 5th “El Alamein” Paratroopers Battalion where he led the platoon and the company. Later he was appointed Chief of the Training, Operations and Information Office of the Battalion, both in Italy and Iraq (Zacko).

He attended the General Staff Course, the General Staff Upper Course at the Spanich Army in Spain, the General Staff Upper Course in Italy and the ISSMI Course (1993-1996). He was employed by the 3rd Department at the General Staff of the Army.

With the rank of Lieutenant Colonel he was the commander of the 5th “El Alamein” Paratroopers Battalion (1998-1999) and the Task Force based on the 5th Battalion in Bosnia Herzegovina; he was later moved to the Joint Forces Operational High Command (COI) as Chief of the Plans Office and then as Chief of the Land Operations Section at the Operations Unit.

At the “Folgore” Brigade, with the rank of Colonel, he was the Commander of the 186th Paratroopers Regiment (2002-2004) and of the “Aquila” Task Force in Kosovo (2004).

After the Regiment Command, he was employed at the Central Organs as Chief of the COI Plans Division. Returned to the “Folgore” with the rank of Brigadier General, he was the Commander of the Elementary Great Unit (2008-2009) and of the West Region (RC-W) in Afghanistan. He was also the Italian Joint Force Headquarters – ITA – JFHQ (2010-2011).

He was the Deputy Commander of the 2nd FOD and Commander of the “Aqui” Division in S.Giorgio a Cremano (NA) (2011-2012). He was in service at the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps (NRDC-ITA) in Solbiate Olona (2012-2014) as Chief of General Staff. At that Command he was also Acting Commander (2013-2014).

From 2014 to 2016 he was Chief of the COI Operations Department. He was Deputy Commander in the Resolute Support NATO Mission and the Italian Senior National Representative in Afghanistan (2016-2017).

He attended all the most important courses concerning the paratroopers specialty, among which the Freefall Technique Course, Parachuting Director and Guide Patrol. He gained the French, American, Belgium, English and Germany licence as paratrooper. He graduated in Strategic Sciences at the University in Turin and in Political Sciences; he has also got a Master’s Degree in Strategic Sciences. He can speak English and Spanish.

He is Knight of the Military Order of Italy, Knight of the Order to the Merit of the Italian Republic.

He was awarded with the following decorations:

  • Bronze Cross to the Army Merit;
  • Ghazi Mir Bacha Khan Medal, given by the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan;
  • “Meritorius Service NATO” Medal;
  • Golden Medal to the Merit for Long Parachuting Activity;
  • Golden Cross for Long Service;
  • Silver Medal for Long Command;
  • Certificate of Public Merit of the National Civil Protection;
  • 6 NATO Medals;
  • French Commemorative Medal for Ex Yugoslavia;
  • 6 Commemorative national Crosses for Operations in Lebanon, Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia Herzegovina and Afghanistan.
