The General Staff of the Army is organized in a Department, a Directorate and five Divisions, each of them dedicated to a specific subject. Here below you can find a brief description about the tasks and the structure of each Units.
Department of Infrastructure was formed on 1st September 2015 in order to have a unified vision of the infrastructure management.
Directorate for the Central Coordination of the Surveillance, Prevention and Protection Service has to monitor the implementation of the national legislation about the security and the health on workplaces.
1st Division for Legal and Economic Affairs of the Personnel oversees the policies of the military personnel. It is divided into two main areas supervised by the Deputy Head of Department and by the Commander of the Selection and Recruitment National Centre (CSRNE). At the dependencies of the Deputy Head of Department there are the following offices:
At the dependencies of the CSRNE Commander there are:
- Recruitment and Promotion;
- Economic Treatment and Military Representation;
- Legal – Juridical.
- The Selection and Recruitment National Centre of the Army (in Foligno);
- The VFP1 Selection Centres (in Foligno, Rome, Palermo).
This Department has also got skills related to information about the parliamentary and legislative acts, the Secretarial support to the Central Committee of Representation (COCER).
3rd General Planning Division is responsible for the general planning and to define, in an analytic way, the capabilities of the land Military Tool in order to guarantee the security and organize the forces, supporting the capability development. It also manages the "Lessons Learnt Process" and the development of the Doctrine Corps of the Army, participating in the elaboration of that of the joint forces and the NATO in order to optimize the operational and training activities of the Armed Force like those of the Allied Forces.
4th Logistics Division has to develop the policy of the materials, issue technical-operational directives for the logistics activity and define the logistic organization of the Armed Force. At its dependencies there is the Information Systems Centre of the Army.
5th General Affairs Division is responsible for the "welfare of the Staff", in particular for the social protection and the welfare benefits. It supervises the ceremonials activities and the public relations and it coordinates the concession of examinations for the Armed Force. It is also responsible for the marketing communication and the promotion of the enlistments. The Division is the depository of the historical heritage of the Armed Force. The "Military Magazine" represents the instruments to publicize the military thinking, through studies and debates. Moreover it manages the document flows and the Service of the Information Technology Protocol. It is divided into five Offices: General Affairs, Journalism Centre, Document Flows and Service of the Information Technology Protocol, Marketing and
Historic Office. At its dependencies there is the Central Logistic Group.
6th C4I Systems Division defines the policy of C4I materials and supervises the renovation of the C4I systems, means and materials of the Armed Force. It has also to identify and define the needs to meet on the operational field and to elaborate the financial planning of the Armed Force in the investment sector, identifying the objectives achievable through the resources and the modalities.
General and Financial Planning Division was instituted at the end of the nineties in order to "look to the future" in all the areas of the Armed Force. It develops the programming in line with the goals and on the basis of the available financial resources. Since 1st November 2015, at its dependencies there is the Transformation Office that has to coordinate the modernization of the Land Military Instrument using the DOTMLPFI (Doctrine, Organization, Training, Material, Leadership, Personnel, Facilities, Interoperability). The Division has also got the responsibility for the Organization of the Army Completion.
