Major General

​Major General Agostino Biancafarina was born on 23rd August 1957 in Alviano (Terni).

In 1977-1979 he attended the 159th Academy Course and later, from 1980 to 1981, the Application School in Turin.

From 1982 to 1985 he was Deputy Battery Commander at the 5th Regiment. From 1985 to 1987 he was appointed Cadets Company Commander at the Military Academy of Modena and from 1987 to 1991 Battery Commander in the 5th Regiment. Later he served at the General Staff of the Army, 1st Unit; from 1996 to 1998 he was appointed Commander of the Antimissile Group in Sabaudia and then Chief of General Staff of the Artillery School. From 1998 to 2002 he was Section Chief in the Personnel Employment Unit at the General Staff of the Army and from 2002 to 2003 he was the Commander of the 4th Regiment. From 11th September 2003 to 22nd January 2004 he served as ACOS for External Relations at the South-Eastern Multinational Brigade in Mostar (Bosnia/Herzegovina); he then came back to Rome to fill the position of Head of the Non-Commissioned Officers and Civil Personnel Employment Office, at the General Staff of the Army. Since 11th January 2008 he has served as a Commander of the "Pinerolo" Brigade and since 30th April 2008 he has been employed in Kosovo for six months as Multinational Task Force West Commander and Italian Contingent Commander. In January 2009 he was appointed Deputy Chief of the 5th Department of General Affairs and since 20th July 2011 he has been Chief of the 5th Department of General Affairs. He was also Commander of the Military Geographical Institute in Florence from October 2012 to June 2015. On 9th July 2015 he was appointed Capital Military Commander. He has attended the 116th Course of General Staff and the 116th Upper Course of General Staff at the War School and in 2007 the Course of the Royal College of Defence Studies in London.

He has got a degree in "Strategic Sciences" and "International and Diplomatic Relations". He has also achieved master degrees in Strategic Sciences and Institutional Communication.

He is married and has got a son.

Major General Biancafarina has been awarded with the following decorations:

  • Knight of the Order to the Merit of the Italian Republic;
  • Medal to the Merit for Long Command in the Army;
  • Gold Cross for Seniority;
  • NATO Commemorative Medal;
  • Commemorative Medal for peacekeeping operations in Bosnia/Herzegovina and Kosovo;
  • Knight of San Silvestro Pope Order;
  • Medal for the Slovenian multinational cooperation of 1st level.
