Claudio Berto

Lieutenant General

​​Lieutenant General Claudio Berto was born on 26th August 1958 in Turin.

He attended the 159th Course at the Military Academy of Modena in 1978-1979 and the Army Application School of Turin in 1980-1981.

He did military service at the “Taurinense” and “Julia” Alpine Brigades, at the Command of the 4th Alpine Army Corps, at the Alpine Military School, at the General Staff of the Army and different NATO Command Headquarters.

He graduated in Strategic Sciences at the University in Turin where he also gained the Master’s Degree; he gained a Master’s Degree at La Sapienza Univeristy in Rome and he attended a Course for Managers of the Ministry of Defence at the Link Campus University. He can speak very well English.

General Claudio Berto has held the following important positions:
  • “Susa” Alpine Battalion Commander in Pinerolo;
  • Task Force Commander in Sarajevo (Bosnia Herzegovina);
  • Chief of General Staff of the Alpine Military School in Aosta;
  • J3 Deputy Chief at the NATO HQ KFOR in Pristina (Kosovo);
  • Commander of the 9th Alpine Regiment in L’Aquila;
  • “Nibbio” Task Force Commander in Afghanistan;
  • Chief of the Public Information Office at the 5th Division of the General Staff of the Army in Rome;
  • Alpine Training Centre Commander in Aosta;
  • “Taurinense” Alpine Brigade Commander in Turin;
  • Commander of the Regional Command West ISAF in Heart (Afghanistan);
  • Northern Military Region Commander;
  • Chief of the 5th General Affairs Office of the General Staff of the Army;
  • Deputy Commander of the Training and Application School of the Army;
  • Commander of the Training and Application School of the Army;
  • Commander of the Training Specialization Doctrine Command of the Army;

He was awarded with the following decorations:

  • Knight Commander of the Order to the Merit of the Italian Republic;
  • Golden Cross for military seniority;
  • Meritorius Service Medal for the operation in Afghanistan;
  • NATO Medals for the operations in Ex Yugoslavia, Kosovo and Afghanistan;
  • Commemorative Cross for peacekeeping missions in Bosnia Herzegovina and Afghanistan;
  • Bronze and Silver Medals for Long Command;
  • Bronze Cross to the Army Merit;
  • Medal to the Merit for the flood emergency in Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont and Liguria;
  • Maurician Medal to the Merit of Ten Lustrums of military career;
  • NATO Medal for merit service;
  • USA Medal for “Legion of Merit”;
  • Medal for the cooperation with the Slovenian Armed Forces;
  • Medal for the cooperation with the Albanian Armed Forces.
Since 8th February 2018 he is the Commander of the Alpine Troops.
