Start of Mission:
End of Mission:
On 9th January 2005 the Sudanese Government and the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Sudan signed a peace agreement (Comprehensive Peace Agreement – CPA) in Nairobi, Kenia, that established the rules for the division of the power between Northern and Southern Sudan. After the failure to comply the agreements, on 24th March 2005 the UN Security Council approved the Resolution 1590 that established the employment of a multinational military force authorized to launch the mission UNMIS (United Nations Mission in Sudan). The aim of the UNMIS mission was to support the implementation of the CPA and assist the Sudanese Government and the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Sudan in the implementation of the peace agreement. Italy participated in the UNMIS mission (nationally called "Nile" Operation) with a battalion on the basis of the 183rd Paratrooper Regiment "Nembo", called Task Force "LION", that had to contribute to the formation of a military component in the mission.
