After protracted negotiations, on 13th December 1988 the Governments of Pretoria, Luanda and Havana signed an agreement for the retreat of Cubans from Angola, the subsequent demilitarization of the South-Africans from Namibia and the declaration of independence of the Nation. According to the UN Resolution 435/78, Italy intervened in UNTAG (United Nations Temporary Assistance Group) with an helicopter squadron of the Army called "Helitaly". The squadron's tasks were: medical evacuation of the population, research and rescue, transport of personnel and materials and the connection between the central Command and the associated Commands.
