In the context of the international fight against terrorism, in March 2003 a coalition headed by the USA undertook the Operation "Iraqi Freedom" in Iraq, in order to overthrow the regime of Saddam Hussein. On 22nd May 2003 the UN Security Council passed the Resolution n. 1483 that pushed the International Community for a contribution to the stability and the security of the Iraqi Country.
Italy joined the operation with its Interforce Military Contingent deployed in the southern region of Iraqi, under the responsibility of the Multinational Division in English guide.
The Contingent "Ancient Babylon" has seen the alternation of about 30.000 Italian soldiers deployed in the province of DhiQar.
