After the Joint Action n.736 of the EU Council adopted on 15th September 2008, the EU ordered the deployment of a mission named "European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia, in the areas near Southern Ossetia and Abkhazia; the mission, with the headquarters in Tbilisi, aimed to guarantee the monitoring of what the EU-Russia agreements of 12th August and 8th September 2008 had considered.
The EUMM operated in coordination with the missions activated in the Country by the OSCE and by the ONU (UNOMG – United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia). 26 EU member Countries participated in the mission that started on 1st October 2008.
On 30th December 2011, all the Italian staff employed in the operation came back to the homeland and the national contribution ended.
